Superintendent Danny Adkins announces that all Floyd County Schools will remain virtual until November 30, 2020.
Adkins comments, “As we have seen Floyd County remain identified as a red county by the Floyd County Health Department and an increase in the positivity rate statewide, all schools will continue virtual instruction through November 27. We hope to be able to return to in-person classes on November 30.”
Adkins continues, “We know that this is not the ideal situation for all of our students and families but at this time, we are doing everything we can to help reduce the spread of the virus. Our goal is to get back to school and in order to do that, we simply have to get a better handle on the spread of the virus. That’s why we are asking our students, staff families and community members to join us in being more diligent than ever in following CDC guidelines and washing our hands, wearing our masks, reducing our contacts and social distancing.”
Based on the Healthy at School guidance from the Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky Department of Public, all counties are color coded as green, yellow, orange or red based on the average daily cases for a 7 day period. Green means On Track, with less than 1 case per 100,000. Yellow means Community Spread with 1 to 10 positive cases per 100,000. Orange status is Accelerated and means that there are 10 to 25 positive cases per 100,000. Red status is Critical and means that there are 25 or more positive cases per 100,000.
Adkins says, “When the county is deemed to be red, all instruction is virtual and extracurricular activities are suspended. This has been determined by health officials to be the best route to reducing the spread and protecting our students, staff and community. We have made the following decisions regarding athletics based on guidelines provided by the state:
- Contests/games that fall under KHSAA postseason jurisdiction will proceed.
- Follow KHSAA Healthy at Sports guidance which allows practice, but no games or game-like simulations for teams not already in postseason play.
- Reschedule regular season contests planned for next week, when possible.
- Review the data again on Thursday evening and make another determination about athletics next Friday morning.
Adkins concludes. “We want to thank everyone for their continued support for our students and staff, for your flexibility as we make changes to continue doing the best we can do for students and for all you are doing to help reduce the spread of the virus. Our first priority is the health and well being of our students, staff and community and we appreciate the sacrifices everyone is making. Join us in keeping those who have tested positive in our thoughts and prayers and let’s do everything we can to be able to get back to in-person instruction as safely and as soon as possible.”
